Summary of Carrie film plot

Carrie White is a shy teenage girl who has no friends in school. She is brought up by her religiously fanatic mother and is often sent to the closet to pray for forgiveness for her sins. One day Carrie gets unexpectedly her first period in the school showers and is terrified. Her class mates don’t understand her frightend reaction and taunt her, throwing tampons and towels at her. The gym teacher stops the girls and disciplines them. One girl, Sue, feels sorry for what she did to Carrie and asks her boyfriend to take Carrie to the school prom. The other girls want revenge and together with their boyfriends they set up the plan to pour pig blood over Carrie at the prom. But Carrie has developed telekinetic powers and now the others have pushed her over the edge.

Main differences between Stephen King’s Carrie book and the film

  • Carrie is a skinny teenager in the film, while she is overweight in the book.
  • Carries kills only her school mates in the film, but in the book she kills more people in the streets of the village.
  • In the film Sue has a dream about Carrie’s grave. She bends down and a bloody hand grabs her out of the grave. This scene doesn’t exist in the book.

What TheDarkKing thinks about Carrie

Carrie is the classic horror movie of the 70s. Altough it’s less a horror movie than a psychological thriller that shows us the sad and emotionally intense story of a girl that is bullied in school and abused at home.

Carrie is the first Stephen Kind film adaptation and it follows quite closely the novel. Sissy Spacek as Carrie and Piper Laurie as her mother are so intense, they make you believe they are their characters. Both were nominated for Acadamy Awards for this film. It was the first time that someone was nominated for a role in a horror movie.

It is said that Stephen King liked the adaption and he is pleased with the final scene when Carrie’s hand grabs Sue out of the grave.

Altough the movie is from the 70s and therefore the special effects are really 70s, the film is still worthwhile watching. Everyone that experienced bullying in school or overprotective parents can relate to the story.

The film adaptation is really good and if you liked the book, you will like the movie too.

    Babs said,

I honestly didn’t expect much from a horror movie from the 70s. But I thought, well I’ll give it a try. And it turned out I really enjoyed watching it. It’s intense and you go through all emotions - anger, terror, powerlessness, joy. The actors are really good and Sissy Spacek’s eyes are one of the creepiest things! Of course the music and the make up is typically 70s, but it’s not so bad. As you said, altough Carrie has one or two kind of horror scenes, it’s more a psycho thriller and it’s therefore also recommendable for people that are usually not interested in the genre.
